Research Careers in Germany: Myths, Realities and Opportunities (GAIN26)

Academic careers require a substantial investment of time and, particularly during the early career stage, often involve moving to other institutions—frequently abroad—to pursue research opportunities. This presents unique challenges for dual-career couples in academia, where both partners are highly qualified, pursue independent career paths, and are equally committed to advancing their professional careers. These challenges become even more complex in the context of transatlantic mobility.
In this workshop, we will explore key questions, including:

How can researchers successfully pursue an academic career while balancing family responsibilities and personal commitments?
What challenges—and opportunities—do dual-career couples encounter?
Which support services are particularly valuable when returning to Germany?
What does a typical dual-career process look like?
