Pathways to a Professorship at German Universities of Applied Sciences

Are you a doctoral candidate or postdoctoral researcher interested in an academic career in Germany? This session provides insights into how to qualify for and pursue a professorship at a German University of Applied Sciences (UAS). The event is open to participants from all disciplines and backgrounds, with a particular focus on candidates from North America – but all are welcome.

The workshop will explore the following key topics:

• Qualification and application requirements for UAS professorships

• Academic and professional experience expectations

• Available support structures, including some pointers on visa-related issues

• Practical advice and networking opportunities

What makes a University of Applied Sciences unique?

German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) focus on practice-oriented teaching, applied and transformative research, and strong collaboration with industry and society. Their close regional and international networks create a dynamic environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship.

What career paths are available?

There is growing demand for professors at German UAS. Ideal candidates hold strong academic qualifications and relevant professional experience outside academia. While knowledge of German is highly recommended, reality is a little more nuanced. Most openings are in STEM, health or design fields, but there are openings in many other fields as well.

Who should join?

This event is designed for motivated doctoral candidates and postdocs who enjoy teaching, are proactive, and seek to make a meaningful contribution to higher education and applied research in Germany.

Join us to explore your path toward a professorship at a German University of Applied Sciences and connect with experts who can support your next career step.
