GAIN21: Science Slam – Win $3000

Present your research at GAIN21

Welcome on stage: the GAIN Science Slam is all about science communication. Five international researchers from various fields will present their findings in a five-minute pitch in front of the virtual GAIN21 audience. The objective is to impart current research results to a diverse audience in an understandable and entertaining way. Various presentations suitable for the virtual format are allowed. The virtual GAIN audience is also the Science Slam Jury.

Science Slams started in German university towns in the mid-2000s: Darmstadt, Braunschweig, Hamburg. Today, Science Slams are held all over Germany on a weekly basis. For GAIN21, it makes perfect sense to merge American storytelling, elevator pitches, and German science communication on the virtual GAIN21 stage.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:

We want you! We are looking for five international researchers to present their findings in the brief and lively virtual Science Slam format. Any postdoc, early career researcher, or GAIN21 attendee can apply. Only your own research can be presented. Applications from all disciplines are welcome!

YOUR AUDIENCE:

The GAIN annual conference is the largest German science and research career fair in the US, with participants ranging from early career researchers to representatives of over 50 German universities, research institutions, and funding agencies. The virtual GAIN21 audience will vote on the winner.

WHERE AND WHEN:

The virtual GAIN21 Science Slam will take place on August 27, 2021, 12:00-1:00 pm EST.

THE GAIN SCIENCE SLAM AWARD:

The best slammer will receive a $3,000 check! Proudly presented by the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH)

HOW TO APPLY?

Send us an email to hoedebeck@daad.de and submit a one-minute video pitching your slam in English.

Deadline: June 30th, 2021.

The GAIN21 committee will select up to five slammers. They will participate in a workshop on science communication with GAIN trustee and seasoned science slammer Martin R. Lichtenthaler in late July/early August to prepare for the digital science slam.
